The most breathtaking view I have ever experienced. The most amazing moonlight I have ever seen. Avalon Reef is a place you would definitely come back to. I know I will.

The Avalon Reef Resort is not as they advertise. This is a 3 to a 4 star resort at best. Just got back on 4/14/05 and am very disappointed. The resort had no onsite golf carts to rent; you could pay for one at the resort but had to walk into downtown area to get the cart. They had 2 worn out bicycles for the entire resort to use. The food was average at best and not a lot of selection. The snorkeling gear they provide was Wal-Mart quality and they only allowed you to use it for 1.5 hrs. Bring your own volleyball if you want to play because they never could find one. They have no hammocks. The Kings Bath has no way to it other than to climb over a fence and walk over very sharp jagged rocks for about 50 yds. I do a lot of hiking and I can tell you this was tricky and dangerous. If you slip and fall on these jagged boulders you most likely will need a trip to the hospital. Wear tight fitting shoes if you attempt it. They do not have enough chairs and lounges to accommodate everyone! ----- The sandy beach has as many rocks in as it does sand. Standard room is very small. The nightclub was closed most of the nights we were there. Now for the service or lack of: Bartenders and servers ignore you for the most part. My first time at the bar, the bartender looked up at me then walked off and started doing something else. During our stay I noticed this same attitude toward most of the guests. Then I realized why. THEY WANT YOU TO BUY A TIME SHARE! Certain people wear a different color arm band, yellow, ours were light blue. People with the yellow wrist bands had showed interest in the time shares and they were treated noticeably better than the rest of us. Minimal effort was put forth by the staff. ----- To top it all off when we left they failed to tell us that our flight was going to be delayed for over 5 hours. We discovered this during check in at the airport. When we called the hotel from the airport they told us that we should have told them we wanted a flight confirmation before we left and that there was nothing they could do for us. This is really unbelievable because other people who were on our return flight told us that there resorts stopped them at the front desk during checkout and informed them of the situation and extended there time at the resort until the flight arrived. The Avalon just left us at the airport to fend for ourselves. I do not recommend nor will I return here.

My husband and I really enjoyed our February 2005 stay at the Avalon Reef hotel. We participated in the tour/presentation for their Vacation Club and found it to be informative and not high pressure. We definitely plan to return.

Cancun looks, to me, like Vegas by the sea. As the guide at Chichen Itza declared, "Cancun is plastic." Isla Mujeres has more of the feel of a small town - the pace is more relaxed, the beaches are beautiful, even the downtown shopping area has its own charm (devoid of McDonald's, Wal-Mart and Hard Rock Cafe - all of which blight the landscape in Cancun). Our stay at the Avalon Reef (early February 2005) was outstanding, once we made it clear to the time-share salesperson we had no interest in that. The food may not have been five-star, but it was well-prepared and diverse, even my vegetarian wife found things to eat. It didn't compare with Zazil Ha, the restaurant on the other side of the pier, but over the course of the week we were presented with many different choices each day, it became a bit of a game to guess what the theme was each night, however, since even Italian night tasted like Mexico. One warning: If you want to eat anywhere but the buffet you have to make reservations as soon as they open. We never did get to eat in Mi Casa, within 30 minutes of opening reservations, it was generally full. It's a short walk from the hotel to the shopping district, the ferry and the main taxi stand. Garrafon, the water park, at the south end of the island is only a $5 usd cab ride. For that matter, if you're reasonably fit, you can walk the entire island. We had a pleasant walk back to downtown from the turtle sanctuary one afternoon. The hotel was clean and the rooms well-stocked, bottled water and all. The room was on the small side by U.S. standards, but more than adequate for two people. The staff was helpful, especially the in-house travel agency and courteous. While we probably won't return to the Avalon when we go back to Isla Mujeres, I certainly recommend it - especially for first-timers who don't want to have to worry about transfers from the airport.

Staff is hospitable but little slow at Avalon Reef Club Isla Mujeres. Food reminds rather of school cafeteria than 5 star hotel.

Avalon Reef Club Isla Mujeres is quite spectacular in its serenity and yet one can still party hard at a Five Star resort. The staff is quite attentive and thus thereby earn the respect of the patron. The resort as far as diving is concerned is one of the best. Dining is well respected as some of the best Mexico has to offer.
