Remember to study up on your spanish before you go, so that you can understand some of the staff. Bring plenty of cash if you want to buy something at the gift shops. They don't have much luck with buying something with a credit card.

I just recently went to Catalonia Riviera Maya in November 2007. It was the best trip I had ever been on. It has wonderful beaches, and the staff is very friendly. You will always have something to occupy your time while you are at Catalonia Rivera Maya. You will have a great time if you go. There are plenty of bars and pools around the hotel. It is also a great place to take your kids.

This is the second time I have been to the Catalonia Riviera Maya, and I feel the same as I did before. This hotel is the greatest, and I have traveled for 30 years to several islands and to Mexico. If you like good food and drink you will like this hotel. The rooms are clean, the grounds are well maintained and the people are great. So visit this hotel, have fun, drink rum, and enjoy the sun.

Stayed four nights at the Catalonia Riviera Maya 19-23 June with wife and young daughter. Although it rained two out of the 4 days we had a great time and loved the place, for the price it can't be beat. We're from Texas, used to good Mexican food and came away very satisfied. Had a great 4-course meal at the Italian ala carte, best veal I've ever had, thin with tuna sauce and capers. Frangelica and expresso - would have easily been a $100 tab, and we were only paying a few bucks more a night to stay there! Sure, it could use more beach. To the right, south, you can walk a km or two toward the marina area on nice beach, but to the left, north, it's all rough coral rock. Always easy to find a chair by the beach or lagoon - pool ones filled up faster. Rooms very clean, cold AC, TV, and balcony. Booked here through CancunSmart.com, pre-paid, they had the reservation and on check-out, no additional charges. Shows were a little cheesy and not a great kids club. Brought our own snorkel gear and saw squid, barracuda and tons of little fishies, right out front. All in all, very relaxing. Have stayed at Continental Plaza and Iberostar Quetzal in Playa del Carmen and rank this place right up there.

My family and I went to Catalonia Riviera Maya over my spring break. It was the best time we have ever had on a vacation. All of the staff at the hotel was very friendly and always willing to help you. The food was amazing especially all of the variety on the buffets. The resort is located just down the road within walking distance to shops which were nice. By the shops is also a swimming with dolphins place which looked really nice. Be sure if you want to go swimming though to book early as I was unable to go there but I did get to go to one in Cancun. I would recommend the one down the road from the hotel because we were watching and they did a lot more things than I got to at the other place. So once again my family had a great experience at the resort and want to go back again next year with another family.

I just came back from the Catalonia hotel a day ago, and I loved it! I miss it so much and I want to go back again asap. It was the best place I ever stayed at. The 5 pools were awesome, and there were pools for everything-volleyball, lounging, a pool bar, and so much more. The beach wasn't really big, but there was the lagoon, which was terrific. I loved the kayaking, and beach volleyball. Snorkeling and catamaran-rides were very cool too. It was very safe, and my parents never worried about my sister and I being without them all day. The night shows were different each night such as cine-dance, comedy central etc. The food wasn't the best, but there was always something which tasted good. The desserts were especially good! The bars were all very good, and there were so many drinks anyone could get (even drinks w/out alcohol). The animation team (the A-team) were the best! They're all so energetic, friendly and fun and come up with all sorts of crazy fun games (the Olympics, beer drinking contest, etc). All of them were awesome, and my sister and me talked w/many of them, especially Janet, and a lot of others. They were very funny and made everyone laugh! Also, when I was there, the other resort mostly had French people, but that was fine too. Also-topless women, and a lot of guys in speedos. haha. (but you get used to it). The rooms were very nice and the origami towels were creative! I love this resort, and anyone should go! :-)

We had a great time with perfect weather and a great resort, or should I say, "resorts" considering the Catalonia is really two resorts, The Catalonia Yucatan and The Catalonia Riviera Maya. Guests are given privileges to both resorts. I read in one of the online items about the resort having one side for just Italians but this was not true during our stay. People from all cultures mixed at both resorts. There were some Europeans going topless but this was not the norm. We have seen this at every resort we have visited. ----- The rooms are a bit smaller than at the Copacabana but then we never spend much time in our rooms anyway so this was no sacrifice at all. There was plenty of closet space, the typical firm beds, a patio or deck and A/C. What more do you need inside, right? And, above all, they were absolutely spotless. The staff did a great job of maintaining this place in both the facilities and the grounds. The only negative I have about the rooms is that they seemed unusually loud with plumbing noise and adjacent room noise. We were usually so tired from the day's activities, however, once we went to sleep, we stayed that way. ----- The food was a little unusual in that the hotel tried to mix Caribbean, Mexican and European foods. For example, I have never had mussels or quail at any other resort but we had them here. Of course there was always plenty of other dishes to sample so there was always something to enjoy. As you entered the buffet dinner each evening, you were greeted by a host presenting a different tropical drink to sample. We had this one year at the Copa but not the next and think it is a great idea. Cloth napkins were the norm for the evening meal while paper napkins were used at the lunch buffet and snack bar. The snack bar featured the usual hamburgers and hot dogs and chips with salsa plus other salads, fruits, desserts, etc. While the brochure suggested slacks and a collared shirt for the evening buffets, this really only applied to the three restaurants for which you could reserve meals, ie: steak, Italian or Mexican. ----- There were five pools to enjoy so, depending on your mood, you could swim to the pool bar and get a drink, play basketball or volleyball in the water or simply lounge around in one of the other pools. Again, absolutely spotless and maintained to perfection. The good news about the hotel as compared to the Copa or the Grand Sole is that virtually all the rooms are near enough to the beach and pools to make getting them less of a hike. ----- There were plenty of lounge chairs both around the pool and on the beach area, even when the resorts were full as on Saturdays. You might have to be a bit patient in the early afternoon to find one in the shade but that is typical at any resort we have experienced. ----- The natural beach was nonexistent but the resort had constructed a raised beach for lounging and outdoor sports such as Bocci ball and sand volleyball. A boardwalk along a concrete sea wall divided the ocean from the resort with steps placed along the walk for access to the scarce beach area below the wall. This worked amazingly well, much to my surprise. The only thing we felt a little cheated on was our previous year's long morning walks on the huge beach of the Copa. The Catalonia has constructed a lagoon, however, that offsets this a bit by allowing safe and smooth kayaking in a protected area behind a reef. This also made snorkeling easier and safer, which, by the way, turned out to be pretty good considering the reef directly out from the resort is dead (as are most reefs in this area). I saw lots of fish and a great variety in shallow water that made us feel safer. The fish seemed to know they would be fed by some of the snorkelers and sort of swam in schools around you. ----- All in all, the Catalonias provided a beautiful resort experience with plenty to do, plenty to eat and drink and the highest level of cleanliness and maintenance. While the hotel is not a five star resort with all the marble and mirrors, it measures up to them in many ways. Will we go there again? You bet - and with smiles on our faces as we anticipate the gracious and accommodating staff, the beautiful grounds and all the other amenities it has to offer.

I visited Catalonia Riviera Maya from Dec. 12th to the 19th 2004 with my 15-year-old daughter. We had a lovely time. For the people that complain about the food I don't understand. There was so much variety that there was something for everyone. The a la carte restaurants were excellent - be sure to book ahead to avoid disappointment. The only thing I would change is they should have a get together activity each day for teenagers so they could meet. They are the only age group that is not really focused on. However, we had a great time and would return to this hotel again in a heartbeat except there are so many places to see and so many different experiences to have.

Catalonia was terrible. The food not even edible. Will not be back.

Fantastic hotel and service at Catalonia Riviera Maya. Everybody did all for us too have a good stay. There where so much food that anybody must find something they like! The New Year celebration was also fantastic with Caribbean live music and more fantastic food. Had problem with the safe. Call the front desk and to minutes later there was help at my door! We where advised not too eat salads and stuff like that because you could get stomach trouble. We tasted everything on the tables the 14 days we stayed there and we felt good all the time. The hotel lies also between nice places too go shopping, diving or sight seeing north or south! We will be back with friends from Norway.

Without a shadow of a doubt I can say that Catalonia Riviera Maya is one if not the best hotel I have had the pleasure of staying in. The staff went above and beyond the usual in making our stay as good as they could: from remembering our drinks, ordered after only a few hours, to giving us great meal after great meal every time we used any of the snack bars and restaurants. The pool area and beaches were kept clean and tidy at all times. It was fantastic!

This hotel Catalonia Riviera Maya is great. Ok, there were things that we didn't like: - not all the bars serve the same quality - not every staff member is nice - some rooms are close to noisy places as the disco - the rooms aren't isolated too well. BUT: - most of the bars serve fantastic drinks, try the lobby bar: you'll love it - most staff members are very friendly - the hotel is kept in very good shape - go to the disco and enjoy yourself until it closes! - enjoy the beach and other places that are great over there. For a 4 star resort in a 3rd world country this is a great place to stay! And a very beautiful one too.

My husband and I went to the Catalonia Riviera Maya for our honeymoon October 13th - 20th. When we arrived we told them it was our honeymoon and received a room with an ocean view. Champagne and dessert awaited us at our room later on in the day. We loved our stay. The staff was all extremely friendly and helpful. The scenery is gorgeous - paradise! The rooms and resort are immaculately clean. We had plenty to do the entire time, but most important, plenty of time to relax. We loved the drinks, especially the Cabanas! Jesus at the Looky Bar on the beach was awesome. Cesar and Oscar at the pool bars were great too. Very nice people. I did step aerobics, water aerobics, and salsa lessons. My husband won the arm wrestling contest! The dancers at night were entertaining, and the singers in the front bar too. The food was different than I expected, but it was easy to find things that we liked. The Mexican restaurant - El Alebrije - was very good. The Italian restaurant and the grill were pretty good too. Get reservations right away! Bring calling cards if you want to call home, they are pretty expensive to buy there unless you go through Apple Vacations like we did. Armando from Apple was very helpful. Overall we loved Catalonia Riviera Maya. Just be prepared for topless women and Speedos! We plan on returning some time soon!

I went to the hotel Catalonia Riviera Maya a few weeks ago now but I still miss it loads! It was my favorite hotel that my family and me have ever stayed in. I thought the animation team was the best as they were all so funny, friendly and helpful. My brother and me could go off during the day then meet up with my mum and dad in time for tea. They had no worries whatsoever! The nighttime shows were great except for the professional dancers, which I found a little boring. The food was ok, NOT bad! And the lobby bar was excellent. All the waiters were great. I was that impressed by the hotel. I had come away wanting to learn Spanish so that I can return when I am 18 (3 more years) and work there! I would love to do what the animation team does. Anyone who has any bad comments about the hotel was obviously staying at a different one! I can’t wait to return in April for one of the animators wedding. It’s the greatest.

I hated it. Really! The food was not very nice, you always had to wait hours before doing any activities, and there were naked women running around and showing off their body parts! I have two sons and I didn't bring them. I'm glad! This is not a hotel that you would call "4 star". Don't go to Catalonia Riviera Maya planning on having a great time, because you won't.

The Catalonia Riviera Maya hotel was great! The swim-up bar made my day and the great food was just excellent. I even lost a couple of pounds trying to do everything fun. The hotel rooms were great for us and families. This 4 star hotel should be a 100 stars! P.S: The beach was awesome!!!

I have just got back from Catalonia Riviera Maya and don’t have a bad word to say about it! From the moment we saw the picture in the travel magazine we fell in love and it certainly didn’t disappoint. The setting was beautiful, the hotel clean, staff extremely friendly and everyone very helpful. The pools were lovely and there was no better feeling than sitting around a lovely swimming pool with a drink in hand just taking in the scenery. All the waiting staff were amazing and would do anything to help you and the entertainment staff also very good. There was plenty to do, whether it being snorkeling, kayaking, scuba diving or just lazing around. It is definitely without a doubt the best resort i have been to and all those who say it was poor or not up to scratch I just have to wonder whether they were in fact at the same place as me. I would definitely come here again!

When we arrived to the Catalonia we thought we were getting ocean view that’s what the tour company told us. We got a small side room with a safe that never opened. When I mentioned to the front desk we were supposed to get ocean view he said there is no ocean view. Also when I told him the safe never worked and every time we went to go in it we had to wait for one of the workers to come up and open it he should have offered for me not to have to pay but he didn’t even acknowledge what I said. The pools were dirty and hot all the time. The topless women and young girls running everywhere was not very nice especially w/ 2 kids myself. We weren’t expecting that. The food was ok it wasn’t good and the drinks stunk small plastic cups. We made the best of it but I would never go back here again. The showroom was so hot and boiling. I felt bad for the performers who were dripping w/sweat up there. My 13-year-old daughter didn’t like the place at all. Sorry to complain so much but I am giving my truthful opinion about the place. Ok for budget, college kids that type of thing.

When I got there with my mum and dad I couldn’t believe my eyes. The hotel was absolutely gorgeous. The rooms were very clean and we liked how the cleaners made different things with the towels (very creative). I absolutely loved the spaghetti Bolognese that the chef made fresh there and then, you could be waiting in a queue depending how late you go but, it is worth it, trust me! The lagoon was very relaxing down there. I enjoyed the kayaks very much. The hammocks were very relaxing, just watch out and don’t fall out of them! The entertainment staff were superb. I got very friendly with them. They are a friendly bunch of people. But most of all Wilbert, Alfredo, Aaron, Martin, Nicola, Cesar and one of the dancers they named George of the jungle and he was very fit. The shows were very funny as well. If you didn’t want to be took up on stage you can laugh at the people up there but the shows were good and you can have drinks in the theatre as well. The only thing with Mexico was traveling but hey, if you want a hotel like Catalonia Riviera Maya then go for it. I recommend it to anyone. If I had the money I would go again tomorrow. I enjoyed it that much. I really didn’t want to leave. You felt very welcome in the hotel and all the staff that work in the hotel always said hi. So if you would like to go to Mexico go to Catalonia Riviera Maya, it is the best hotel I have been in.

Just got back from 5 days at the Catalonia Riviera Maya resort. Had a wonderful time! We loved it! What a wonderful place. The place is beautiful, very clean, and quiet. There was always something to do! Dance lessons, bingo, bocce ball, volleyball, painting ceramics... As for the beds, as I am picky as well, they were firm but not too bad. Maybe we were just very tired and slept well every night. FOOD: The food was good, not great, but was hard to get into the specialty restaurants. We tipped $20.00 to get in. There wasn't an overwhelming selection in the buffets, but there was something for everyone. The snack bar was a great place for our American favorites like pizza, burgers, hot dogs and fries. The fries were great - even added cheese and chili. DRINKS: The drinks were very good. They have a menu of specialty drinks, we just started with the first one and tried them The bars all have different drinks but can request one from another bar at all bars. We even changed a few slightly to accommodateour tastes. BEACH AND POOLS: DEFINITELY take water shoes. In places, it was a bit rocky. The beach and pools were kept spotless. Each pool had something to do, volleyball, basketball. water polo, swim up bar. STAFF: The animation staff kept us entertained and were unbelievable! They never stop!! Not sure where they get their energy. TOURS: We went through Funjet and booked a tour to Xel-Ha and Tulum. Had a great time! Overall, it is a great place for families or adults on their own. One warning - many topless women on the beach... However wasn't all that bad.

We went to Catalonia Riviera Maya in June, 2003 and had so much fun, we are going again and my parents are coming with. They have never been to Mexico (or outside the us period) and we know we are taking them to a wonderful clean, fun, place with great food and staff, etc. Oh please, sorry. But the girl who hated the food? No offense, but you sound very very pampered and spoiled, or live on McDonald's - you couldn't find chips and snack cakes? Why would you want to? They did exist if that was what you like. You couldn't eat chips and pizza in the snack bar? Oh come on... Yes, the lobby bar is a bit small; and the drinks are a little watery (though I have learned how to change that on this trip). My husband will eat anything and did. Our kids are a little fussy and they still had no problem finding food. The beach is a bit small and kind of rocky, but how fun to see a barracuda and lots of fish right there in front of the hotel! Oh I could go on and on… We love it!

My mother and I have just returned from Catalonia Riviera Maya last night and what a terrible night that was. We had the most incredible time we could ever hope for, exceeding all out expectations by a long shot. The resort is absolutely gorgeous, the staff is amazingly friendly, sweet, and helpful. The entertainment staff was amazing. So funny, sweet, wonderful dancers and put on an incredible show every night. The food was out of this world. I don't know what these other reviews are talking about, but the food was sooooo delicious. The breads and sweets are baked fresh every day; so many vegetables and the fruit so fresh and delicious. The meat was so soft and so well made. The guacamole was the best one I've ever tasted. The rooms were huge and so clean, everything was just perfect. I cannot wait to go back there. I'm in love.

We stayed at Catalonia Riviera Maya from 25 - 28 April 2004 - This hotel is a great place! Rooms are clean, large and nice furnished, food and drinks were terrific!! We didn’t go to any of the specialty restaurants because the buffets were so good and had a big variety of food. Every evening they had another specialty e.g. sea food, paella ... The snack bar also was very good. People working there, were very friendly and also the activity staff was professional and good. We appreciated that guests came from Mexico, Italy, France, Germany and only some from the US. We really can recommend this hotel to everybody and we’ll sure visit it again next year.

My sister and I just visited Catalonia Riviera Maya in April 2004. The food was just terrible. I cannot say that I had one good meal the whole time we were there. It was so bad! We had to eat buffet for breakfast, lunch & dinner. The restaurants where you could order off the menu were all booked up until our last night. We were so looking forward to a decent dinner our last night there at the Italian rest, and it was bad too. The bad thing about it was that there were really no other options for having a meal - nothing close by except mom & pop type places where it felt a little risky trying. We were even on the hunt for a bag of chips or a snack cake and they were impossible to find. Best advice if you are going here - stock up at airport and take some snacks to the resort with you. Ice was hard to come by at the buffet places & snack bar, so be prepared for warm soda. The grounds were beautiful. Most of the rooms don't have ocean view, but the view is lush and tropical, just not water. The entertainment wasn't very good. It was hard to find a chaise lounge in the shade, because those chaises got reserved with towels early in the day. The beach was nice. Check out the hammocks on the lagoon side of the resort - they were very relaxing and were in the shade. We didn't even know they were there until our 2nd day. There is no hot tub or Jacuzzi - only cold whirlpools as part of the swimming pool. I thought hot tubs were a given at a place like this. If you want to make a call to the United States while you are there with a prepaid calling card, be prepared for an adventure. You cannot make a call from the resort. You have to leave the resort and walk down the street to a pay phone (in the dark if you call in evening). Our safe didn't work the first 2 days there - the whole resort was having an issue with the "safe system", so that was a big aggravation with money and travel documents.

This hotel is great. The food is plentiful and the drinks...well rum is my favorite drink so what does that tell you. The Mexican people are the greatest. I like the hotel, I like the food, I like the rum and I like the people. The Catalonia Riviera Maya is a fun place to spend your holidays....I shall return soon.

This place is great. We stayed at the Catalonia Riviera Maya from Jan 4/04 - Jan 11/04. I would consider it to be a 4+ star. Regarding the comments on the food, I had no problem with finding something to eat at anytime of the day or night, and it was very good. The entertainment staff were the best, but most of all Elania and Nicola (Hope the spelling on the names is correct). Highly recommended. From your Winnipeg friends.

One week in Catalonia Riviera Maya, the food was good, the beach a bit small but snorkeling on the reef is great is you use a hotdog to attract the fish, & skip Xel-ha. Many place to go & snorkeling way better at Cozumel, 1st beach on left. Hotel definitely needs more open, covered spaces to sit, with couches/coffee tables. Nightly entertainment in the bar was ok - but same duo singing every night, and the bar needs more seating. Villa rooms getting a bit old & we had problems with hot water/yellow water coming from faucets. Not really a 4-star and not as nice as Puerto Vallarta Marival.

My husband and I just got back from a pleasant stay at the Catalonia Riviera Maya. It is a beautiful hotel. The staff was very nice and the grounds are impeccable. This being an all inclusive hotel, the food and drinks were plentiful, but the food is awful. I agree with "Frank" that the substandard food is a deal-breaker. A word of caution though, if you are taking your family, be aware that there are many topless women!! We didnt take our kids, but if I had, and they had been exposed to that, I would have been very upset. When we go back, we will not stay at the Cameleon.
Kellie, KellieHinkle@aol.com, 2003-07-21
The Catalonia Riviera Maya is a beautiful hotel. The view was great. The staff was very helpful. There is plenty to do day and night. However, the food was atrocious. I went with my girlfriend and her mother and all of us felt the same about the food. I found myself dreading mealtime witch is not good as I am diabetic and must eat on a regular schedule. It still was a good trip and we all had a great time. That being said, the substandard food is a deal-breaker. When we go back, we will not stay at the Cameleon. If you plan to stay there, bring a lunch!

My husband and I just returned from the Catalonia Riviera Maya and we recommend going there! We had a blast and were very surprised at the amount of English (not to mention Italian and other languages) that the staff and locals knew. We took an all day snorkeling expedition and we went to 2 cenotes (and cliff dove!) and to a lagoon and coral reef. I got to swim with a very curious sea turtle! Also the all inclusive drinks were yummy and we made sure we tried all the blended ones! If you are reading this and are thinking about going...just do it!

My husband and I went to the Catalonia Riviera Maya 2 times within the same year (2002-2003) and I even returned with a friend in May. Some of the staff even remembered us. How nice! We have traveled to many places since the last 25 years and we agree that the Cameleon Marival is by far the best place we have been. People, facilities, food, drinks, animation, shows, everything is just perfect. The beach is a bit small but there is the lagoon and the pools to counter this little problem. This is probably why this hotel is rated 3,5 stars. It is definitely a 5 stars in our hart. I just return from Cuba with my friend and OH GOD we missed the Cameleon.

I had the time of my life when I was at Catalonia Riviera Maya!! The staff were so friendly, and the nightly entertainment was just great! I was a little nervous about the language barrier, but most could speak English very well, and I even came home speaking Spanish! If your looking for a place of complete relaxation, and people to cater you, this is the place to go!!! I hope to be able to return! P.S. The latinos that work in the disco are "HOT!" If you see Damien there, tell them I said hi! (One of the wonderful waiters there!) Have a great vacation! I know I had no complaints!!!

My husband I just returned from a nine day visit to Catalonia Riviera Maya. We would highly recommend this resort. We had beautiful weather and scenery, wonderful entertainment and food. We love to snorkel and the reef was great for this. The staff was so friendly and helpful. The walks to the marina were nice and helped work off some of the calories. It takes about an hour to get from the airport by taxi, but once you enter the gated entrance to Puerto Aventuras, it is a wonderful experience. We hope to return!

My family and I decided to take a short vacation before the end of the year and we have been to Cancun so we thought we would try the Catalonia Riviera Maya. I loved it here... I LOVE MEXICO, the resorts and the people are so friendly and nice. I especially love staying at the Cameleon Marival. I tried Jamaica one year as well but nothing compares too Mexico. Take care Yall.

We had a great stay at Catalonia Riviera Maya. The beach was beautiful - and there is actual living coral to look when snorkelling. We found enough sand for swimming. We had a great week - except the weather wasnt great, but we still enjoyed ourselves. Took merengue and salsa lessons daily to try and counteract the buffet visits! The Italian restaurant was excellent. They even have clamato here, and awesome strawberry margaritas! We would definitely go back!

This was my first visit to Mexico and I found it very enjoyable. The people that worked at the Catalonia Riviera Maya were extremely nice, and the night shows were amazing. The beach though was not as good, it had a lot of coral so it was hard to swim, but if you like to look at fish and creatures it is good.
Breanne, kaluha_02@hotmail.com, 2002-12-11
Overall the standard is very good and I would recommend Catalonia Riviera Maya to friends, but I did find some problems: The food not always labelled and when it is, sometimes you still cant tell if it contains meat... the beds are too hard... the lobby bar needs more seats... overall worth a visit also close to xel-ha and tulum.
