OVERALL: A large middle-market property, lots of tattoos on women and pony-tailed men my age, beer pong at the pool, huge waistlines, guests are bobbing and weaving before noon. ROOMS: Okay. Our "upgraded" rooms - on something called the Lazy River - are at the far end of the resort, but they're quiet and we're enjoying the walks to restaurants, the beach. At the other end of the resort - literally and figuratively - are the Casitas. These certainly look more upscale, but guests there use the same eateries as us riff raff. FOOD: Fortunately, I need to lose a few pounds and it won't be hard to do here. This place fancies itself as a gourmet dining destination, but what was conceived in the executive chef's kitchen has to be completely different from what's presented tableside. SERVICE: Fair to poor with a notable exception or two. This is a big 600-room place with lots of guests at a busy time of year and the staff deals with it like that.

We stayed at the El Dorado Royale in Dec of 2005. It was a very nice hotel with great service. I agree with another visitor that the Mexican food was not the best, nor was the Oriental. The Italian and Jo JO's was excellent. The drinks were excellent too. Many of the bars and pools were not open due to the hurricane, but there still was plenty to do. Entertainment was ok but could have been better. If you are short, avoid this hotel, everything is made for tall people, the tubs and beds are very high and difficult to get into. The beach was rocky which was disappointing. I had a great time but doubt I would return.

Very nice facilities at El Dorado Royale. We stayed at the Casita and loved it. I DO NOT recommend you purchase the Exotic Travel Plan, we somehow got swayed over to it and ended up with a timeshare but no free weeks, only 30% discount. I'm still very upset about this bad investment we made.
