We really had a great time the Oasis Akumal. We are Canadians so we stayed on the Tulum side; the Italians stayed on the Akumal side. I did not notice anything different in the way we were treated....it seemed everyone really enjoyed the food and, especially, that beautiful beach. I don't understand how you cannot have a great time in such a fun place! We didn't have hot water in our room and the power went out a few times...but who cares! There were giant sea urchins out where people were snorkeling, so you OF COURSE had to exercise a bit of caution. There is so much to do, yoga, cooking lessons, volleyball, aqua fit, nightly shows, and the staff is so friendly and energetic. Two swim up bars...a nice snack area...it really is beautiful. We went at the end of June 2005, and we look forward to going again. :)

This is our second trip to Oasis Akumal. We requested ocean view rooms but they were not noted when we got there. However, we were moved and every accommodation was made to help us with two tourists who were 2nd time tourists with cancer. Every amenity was made to help us there and with a move to Cancun due to the hurricane and to leave Mexico. It was a grand experience. Thank you, Marcos, Tina, and others!

They are running a scam and they discriminate towards Americans! I arrived with reservations to stay there - to be told that they did not have my reservations, and that I was booked to stay in Cancun. I refused to stay in their Cancun resort, because it is a downgrade, and I planned a vacation to the Mayan Riviera. We moved to another resort in the Riviera, however, still a downgrade! We met several other families during our stay that had the same experience and also observed groups of Italians being checked in later that same day, when we were sent away in a cab. Their corporate headquarters in Madrid, Spain support this type of business practice and they do not care about ruining people's vacations! They are booking people, and then refusing to give them their rooms, and then sending them to other resorts that are not as popular and/or comparable in terms of accommodations and amenities.

We stayed at Oasis Akumal from July 1 to July 5, 2005. The food was good and that was the best part of our stay. The staff is friendly and helpful. Our first contact with any employee of the resort was when we were asked if we were American or Italian. Being American we were immediately sent to Oasis Cancun instead of Oasis Akumal where we had reservations. This is clearly not the fault of the staff but of the management and ownership. The first evening we were there we inadvertently went to the Italian only restaurant and we quickly sent away with the remark --This is Italian Only--. The staff did show us where we were allowed to eat. The beach is pretty but there are a large number of big rocks just off the shoreline also a lot of sea urchins. There was a couple there who had unfortunately gotten into a bed of these and were in quite a bit of pain. We did see a couple of their shows at night which were good. All in all we were uncomfortable and felt as though parts of the resort were not for anyone but Italians and this lead to a uneasy feeling. We wouldn't go back.

Buyer Beware. It appears the Oasis hotels operate a scam whereby you make reservations at Oasis Akumal and upon arrival they inform you there was an error and your reservation is at Oasis Cancun. We had five rooms reserved, called the Friday prior to arrival to confirm, had confirmation/reservation numbers all to no avail. As the day progressed we ran into other travelers in the same situation. And, after a few days at the Grand Oasis Cancun found others with similar story. Calls to our travel agent and more than three hours of discussion would not persuade management to provide the reserved rooms.

My wife and I spend 12 days at the Akumal Oasis, from May 12-23, 2005. The hotel has a very nice beach, but the overall management is not very good. We had hot water only two out of 12 days. Complaints about it were completely ignored. The food was ok, but not up to the standards of many of the hotels in the area. The hotel staff is very friendly. We would not return to this hotel.

I think the photos are deceiving and I would not give this hotel more than 2 stars. There are 3 pools, but 2 of them weren't working while we were there. There are 2 Jacuzzis, but neither one was ever hot while we were there for a week. The food was okay in the buffet area, but the --reservations-- restaurants were not what we expected. Dress codes are not followed; food is no better than in the buffet; understaffed and very slow. We got only 2 or 3 English-speaking channels on TV and then we lost TV on our last night. No phone or internet option unless you go into the town of Tulum - although that could be a good thing! However, the view out our patio door was the beach and we were within a stones' throw of swimming and snorkeling. The employees are fun and nice. The place was kept pretty clean. If you want a budget place to stay that's really close to the beach, not crowded, and you don't care about frills, the Oasis Akumal is your place.

I stayed at the Oasis Akumal and loved it. I love the entertainers and the place, the beach, the food, everything! And I would like to return to this hotel.

My fiancée and I just returned from this resort and would wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone. The staff was simply excellent, the facilities were always clean, the pools are abundant, and the beach is gorgeous! The one thing to know is that the Oasis Akumal is off the beaten path, which we liked, but you shouldn't plan on taking a taxi into town for some nightclubs. Another thing we liked about the resort is that all buildings, except for the rooms, were open-air hut style. It was so much more relaxing and fresh than some posh resort where everything is inside a building except the beach. The resort is in a great location if you plan to go to the ruins, Xel-Ha, Playa, and others, which I strongly advise. The diversity of the visitors was another great feature, and everyone was very nice. The only drawbacks, if I were pressed to mention, were that our room smelled very musty, and I think that only applies to our building (E). There were setbacks like soda machines not working or lack of ice, but again, very minimal. If you're there to relax, not sweat the small stuff, and be in the elements more often than not, you will love this resort. If you want to be pampered, kept inside luxurious buildings, and get upset if there's not enough ice in your glass, go elsewhere. This place is just fun all the way around.

I had a great time at the hotel Oasis Akumal. I thought was one of the best hotels I have been to. If anyone is thinking of going I recommend this hotel because they just finished renovation and I think the built in bar is great. The staff is great and the activities are welcome to anyone. The only bad thing was Vera club they weren’t very welcoming. Thanks tonz!

We stayed at the Oasis Akumal in 2001 - for our honeymoon. Everything was almost perfect. Food was good. Entertainers were good. The only thing was we felt a little put out because of the Italian section. We couldn't use the equipment on the beach and the Italian restaurant was the --ala Carte or --Specialty Restaurant--. Other than that, I would recommend it to anyone that wants Beachfront, no vendors to bother you great time. Would return maybe soon.

My friend and I had the same experience at the Oasis Akumal as another person who posted their comments on this site. Hotel said that they did not have a room for my friend and I as well. Unlike the smart, we took the free week and got transferred to another resort. The other resort was beautiful, granted, however we never knew how long we were staying, where we would get transferred to next, how we were going to get back to the airport when this was all done or anything. We did end up getting transferred again on our LAST day so needless to say our whole vacation was ruined. Then to find out that those free accommodations do not include flight so my friend and I being single women with our own bills to pay, will not be able to go back as we cannot afford flights. We have written to the hotel and they have flat out ignored us. I am very disappointed with this resort and the only way I would go back there is if we do get free flights. PS - there is a way to avoid this, DO NOT OVERBOOK. They purposely do just in case people cancel. They never want to be empty!

My wife and I spent our first trip to an all-inclusive resort at the Oasis Akumal. It was also our first extended stay to the Mexican Riviera. Oasis Akumal set the bar extremely high during our stay! We enjoyed every aspect of the resort; from the staff, to the food, to the beaches. It was ALL perfect! We highly recommend this resort to our friends and family and look forward to going back in 2005!

Stayed at Oasis Akumal with my wife and our 4 kids in July and we would stay there again. The staff was great and didn't ignore the kids. The food was good the rooms were nice and the beach was beyond words. We snorkeled for hours right out in front of the hotel and saw tons of fish. It's a small quiet resort just right for relaxing.

The beach and reef are tops at Oasis Akumal! You really can snorkel right in front of the hotel. Only negative - they tried to tell us they didn't have a room when we were checking in. I had read this in other reviews, but I thought we would be ok ... we weren't. After a lot of crying, and stress, they gave us a room which was beautiful. When I asked them how to avoid this in the future, they told me that they cannot avoid this problem. So ... beware of this - they will offer to send you to Cancun, and give you a free week during the next 12 months - I would refuse because this hotel's beach and reef are so beautiful.

Oasis Akumal was the greatest place to stay. The food was great, the staff was fantastic, so quiet but lots to do if you want to. I would go back tomorrow.

At the Oasis Akumal you forget everything stressful, and become one with the natural surroundings.
