Located right on the beach, Villas Paraíso del Mar Hotel, offers guests a clear view of sand, surf and sunset. This property features a harmonious blend of rustic and traditional. The hotel has 32 regular suites, and 4 master suites located in one and two-story bungalows, each with air-conditioning, telephone, television, mini-bar, room safe, bathrooms/showers and private terrace; ocean-front master suites come with Jacuzzis. Suites are designed to create a split-level effect with a sleeping loft reached by a wooden staircase. The loft features a king-size bed, while the entry-level living area has two sofa-beds. Four suites are handicap fitted.

Villas Paraíso del Mar Hotel runs day-trips to the island's many sights, notably Bird Island/Isla de Pájaros, and a natural phenomenon called "ojo de agua" (literally waterhole, are springs rising from the ocean floor which create an oasis of fresh water ideal for swimming). Isla Pájaros is the nesting ground for magnificent frigates, cormorants and other water birds, though the entire island is a bird watcher's and nature lover's paradise. Guests may rent bicycles, golf carts or just walk downtown Holbox which is at about 900 meters from the hotel.

I stayed here because it was a recommendation from a friend who'd stayed during the Villas' first year of operation. My stay was a completely different experience! Some examples: every upholstered surface was in drastic need of re-upholstering; the towels (we were only allowed two towels) were frayed & falling apart; they were stingy with TP (we ran out two days); the food wasn't very good but all-inclusive saved money as eating in town was spendy; we didn't have hot water for our shower on 4 of 8 days; oh, and on the last night we brought to our room an extra blanket from the 2nd room of our two room suite - it had bedbugs & upon returning home I had HUNDREDS of bites. The experience is what I expect from some of the "camping"-type facilities on the island, but the price was for a luxury experience. Overall, don't fall prey to the beautiful pictures from the website. I've stayed in better hotels in rural Kenya for $8/day. Don't bother with Villas Paraiso del Mar!
